Every crime map on the internet drops color-coded dots on a satellite view and calls it done. That is data theater. It gives you the sensation of research without any of the substance. Here is what to actually look for when you read a crime map, and what to ignore.
Not all crime is equal. A car break-in in a well-lit lot is bad; an aggravated assault three houses away is a different category. Split the data into three tiers before reading:
A neighborhood with 40 quality-of-life reports and 0 violent is very different from one with 3 total reports where all 3 are violent. Raw count without severity split is misleading.
A single year of data is a snapshot in a very noisy stream. Look at 3-year or 5-year trend. Is violent crime up 12% or down 8%? Trend beats level almost every time when you are making a 5-10 year decision like buying a home.
Is the crime clustered on one specific block (which you can avoid) or diffused across the neighborhood (which you cannot)? Zoom in. A cluster near a specific bar or gas station is very different from a diffuse pattern that touches every residential street.
Violent-crime-per-100-residents, 3-year rolling average, compared to the city median. If your target address is at or below the city median for its city, you are in the safer half of the city — even if the raw number looks scary. Cities are safer or less safe as wholes; neighborhoods within a city vary less than people assume.
